Behind the Cards
The Return of Topps Chrome UEFA Club Competitions

The recent announcement on April 11, 2025 from Topps UK via email (Credit: Fanatics)
On April 11, 2025, Topps UK announced via email that Topps Chrome UEFA Club Competitions 2024/25 will be available for pre-order from April 15, 2025.
In a departure from the usual focus on peripheral stories and lesser-known tales from the hobby in my Behind the Cards section, Topps’ recent update on their 2024/25 Chrome UEFA Club Competitions set is too significant to be confined elsewhere, warranting a special spotlight. The set is rapidly emerging as a highlight of the football card calendar, promising another comprehensive collection that showcases the best talent from the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. Topps’ product description highlights the return of popular inserts such as Wonderkids and Golazo, alongside the revival of Marks of Excellence on-card autographs, which will feature both past and present global football stars, including the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
Collectors can choose between two box configurations: Hobby Boxes, which include 20 packs with 4 cards per pack, and Jumbo Hobby Boxes, offering 12 packs with 10 cards per pack.

Tracking 2024/25 Panini Select Premier League!

2024/25 Panini Select Premier League (Credit: Panini)
The eagerly awaited Panini Select Premier League Soccer is returning for season 2024/25, however the release date for this set has sparked some confusion, with conflicting information circulating among sources.
Panini introduced Select to football in 2015, with the first Premier League-specific Select release debuting in season 2022/23, marking a new chapter for the product. The forthcoming 2024/25 Panini Select Premier League will feature a 250-card base set, divided into three tiers: Terrace, Mezzanine, and Field Level, with a rainbow of parallels available for each tier. Panini’s product description lists the four case hit inserts as Stained Glass, Artistic Impressions, Visionary, and Team Badges, and each hobby box promises 3 autographs and/or memorabilia cards per box. Confusingly, a significant discrepancy exists between Beckett’s predicted release date of April 16, 2025, and Waxstat’s forecast of May 21, 2025, leaving collectors uncertain about when to expect the set. Interestingly, Waxstat forecasts the 2024/25 Panini Premier League Prizm release for April 18, 2025, several weeks ahead of 2024/25 Panini Select Premier League, meanwhile Beckett does not provide a specific release date for the 2024/25 Panini Premier League Prizm in their calendar.
Each hobby box of 2024/25 Panini Select Premier League will contain 12 packs of 5 cards, and each case will contain 12 boxes.
The product is listed as ‘Coming Soon’ on the Panini America website, and interested buyers can set an alert to be notified when Panini sets a release date for the product.

Neymar: A Career Captured Through Cards
From his teenage prodigy days in Brazil to becoming a global football icon, Neymar’s trading cards chronicle a career marked by brilliance and a lingering sense of unfulfilled potential.
Much like Neymar himself, his football cards are elusive and challenging to track and value, reflecting the enigma of a player who, despite being Brazil’s all-time top scorer, often leaves fans wondering what could have been. Neymar burst onto the scene in 2009 as a precocious talent in Brazil, with the market designating his 2009 Abril Gol #154 Santos card as his true rookie, highlighted by its record £14,784 PSA 9 sale in November 2021—the highest ever for a Neymar card, with no PSA 10s in existence. Fast forward to 2014, Neymar was at the peak of his powers heading into the FIFA World Cup on home soil in Brazil, and his 2014 Panini World Cup Prizm #112 card captures this pivotal moment in his career, whilst offering intriguing investment opportunities for collectors willing to seek out high-quality raw cards for grading.
Neymar’s cards offer collectors and investors a fascinating journey, from the 2016 Panini Select Barcelona parallels commemorating his golden era at Camp Nou to his inclusion in the landmark 2017/18 Topps Chrome UEFA Champions League set, marking his record-breaking transfer to PSG and the debut of Topps Chrome in football.

Budget friendly? Panini Prizm World Cup 2014 Prizm #112 raw last sold on Dec 1, 2024 for £0.76, a considerable dip from the average sale price of £288.61. The previous recorded sale price was £43.89 on Feb 1, 2024, and anything lower could be considered value.

Investment opportunity? For collectors seeking raw-to-grade opportunities, the current Card Ladder value of the same card graded at PSA 10 is £262 (last sold May 30, 2024 for £250).

Investment opportunity? The current Card Ladder value of the 2016/17 Panini Select Soccer Field Level Tie-Dye /30 #284 (PSA 10) is £198. With only two recorded sales, both at PSA 10 grade, this authentic Barcelona Neymar card represents true scarcity.

Possible store of value? The Card Ladder value of the 2017/18 Topps Chrome UEFA Champions League Orange Refractor /25 is £447 — £61 less than the Card Ladder value of the Gold /50. Scarce cards from this set seem likely to hold their value, so it may be worth monitoring this market discrepancy.

For Your Interest! The 2018 Panini Kaboom! Gold /10 #NJ Brazil card from the 2018 Panini Kaboom Rewards Multi-Sport set has only six recorded sales and last sold for £4,851 (BGS 9.5) on Dec 5, 2024. The Card Ladder value is currently £5,376.

For your interest! The 2009 Abril Gol #154 Santos card sold for £14,784 (PSA 9) in Nov 21, 2021 — the highest ever sale for a Neymar card, with no PSA 10s in existence.
